Integrate Virtua Into Your Child’s Learning Pod
As we get closer to the fall, districts across the country are committing to distance learning for the health of children, staff, and families. In districts that are opening, many parents are opting to keep their children at home for the foreseeable future. Many families who want to enhance their child’s remote learning experience are forming learning pods or “pandemic pods.” These are small groups of students who will work together during the day while engaging in remote learning. There are several different models for what this looks like depending on the age of the students and resources of the families. Some have the students work together to complete assignments provided by their classroom teacher. Others supplement provided work by hiring a tutor to work with the students on these assignments and to provide additional instruction. Still others have the parents rotate the responsibility of instructing the children. No matter what model being used, Virtua has resources to enhance the remote learning experience.
Families looking for additional resources and guidance for their students will find a treasure trove of materials in Virtua School. We provide over 2,000 lessons in math, english, and science for K-12 students. Wel use cutting edge artificial intelligence technology to adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of student users. This ensures that the more students use the program, the better it will address the areas that a student needs additional support. These lessons, called ‘nuggets,’ can take the form of videos, pictures, or text. Additionally, parents can check in on their children’s progress and create assignments if they want their child to focus on a specific topic. The resource even has guided science experiments tied to lessons that parents or tutors can guide students through. Whether you use it as an additional resource, or as the fulcrum of instruction, we help maximize what is possible in distance learning.
Virtua Library and Magazines
Speaking to elementary and secondary Language Arts teachers, one of the most common concerns with remote learning is making sure that students have access to the books needed for class as well as books in general. Studies have shown that having a home filled with books is a reliable predictor of increased empathy, vocabulary, job stability, and academic achievement. Thankfully, Virtua Library has thousands of ebooks to fill that gap. If a pod wants or needs students to read some of the most common English class books, there are titles like The Catcher in the Rye, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Great Gatsby, and A Wrinkle in Time. Another group that wants to have free reading time during the day can choose from titles like The Lord of the Rings, The Berenstain Bears, A Wrinkle in Time, or one of our magazine subscriptions like National Geographic. Virtua eBooks also have several built in features that increase the accessibility of texts, ensuring that more students are put in a position to develop positive habits with reading.
Virtua Book Clubs
If you are looking to introduce an even more immersive reading experience, you can create a club using Virtua Book Clubs. This platform allows parents or tutor leaders to create regularly meeting clubs to analyze different works. Club leaders can add questions, discussion prompts, and even YouTube videos to guide discussion. To further expand your child’s social learning experience, link up several pods into a single book club, meeting regularly over Zoom, Google Meet, or another video conferencing platform to discuss literature and practice the 21st Century Skills of collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Starting in October, Virtua Book Clubs will be formally launching with certified educators working as club leaders, if you think your family or pod would be interested in joining a club, you can enter your information here.
Pods may not be the perfect solution to fix remote instruction. However, if there was ever a time for imperfect solutions, it is now. At Virtua, we seek to help families improve the educational experience of children through this time of remote instruction and beyond.
